چکیده

In this paper, we measure the rotation of a sunspot in solar active region NOAA 11158 (Solar Target Identifier SOL2011-02-15) that was associated with an M-class flare. The flare occurred when the rotation rate of the sunspot reached its maximum. We further calculate the energy in the corona produced by the sunspot rotation. The energy accumulated in the corona before the flare reached 5.5× 10 erg, sufficient for energy requirements for a moderately big solar eruption. This suggests that sunspot rotation, which is often observed in solar active regions, is an effective mechanism for building up magnetic energy in the corona.

P-modes in and Away from a Sunspot

A time series of GONG Dopplergrams for the period 10-14 May 1997 from Udaipur and Big Bear sites has been used to measure the velocity fluctuations in the sunspot (NOAA active region 8038) and quiet photosphere simultaneously. We observe that the power of pre-dominant p-mode is reduced in the sunspot as compared to quiet photosphere by 39-52% depending on the location of the sunspot region on t...

Emergence of a Twisted Magnetic Flux Bundle as a Source of Strong Flare Activity

Sunspot proper motions and flares of a super active region NOAA 5395, which was the biggest and the most flare-active region in the 22nd sunspot cycle, were analyzed in details. We measured sunspot proper motions by using the Hα − 5.0 Å images obtained with the 60-cm Domeless Solar Telescope (DST) at Hida Observatory, Kyoto University and found some peculiar vortex-like motions of small satelli...

Automatic Short-term Solar Flare Prediction Using Machine Learning and Sunspot Associations

In this paper, a machine learning-based system that could provide automated short-term solar flares prediction is presented. This system accepts two sets of inputs: McIntosh classification of sunspot groups and solar cycle data. In order to establish a correlation between solar flares and sunspot groups, the system explores the publicly available solar catalogues from the National Geophysical D...

MAG4 versus alternative techniques for forecasting active region flare productivity

MAG4 is a technique of forecasting an active region's rate of production of major flares in the coming few days from a free magnetic energy proxy. We present a statistical method of measuring the difference in performance between MAG4 and comparable alternative techniques that forecast an active region's major-flare productivity from alternative observed aspects of the active region. We demonst...

Toward an Efficient Prediction of Solar Flares: Which Parameters, and How?

Solar flare prediction has become a forefront topic in contemporary solar physics, with numerous published methods relying on numerous predictive parameters, that can even be divided into parameter classes. Attempting further insight, we focus on two popular classes of flare-predictive parameters, namely multiscale (i.e., fractal and multifractal) and proxy (i.e., morphological) parameters, and...
